The Press Secretary works within the Governor's Communications Team and reports to the Director of Communications. Oversees the Governor’s media contacts and performs highly responsible media work. Performs a wide range of advanced (senior-level) communication responsibilities including events and media management, production of publications for the Governor, responding to media inquiries in numerous policy areas, consultancy in the production of publications, speeches, news releases, and website content. Duties require extensive travel and irregular hours, including on short notice. Works evenings, nights, holidays and/or weekends as may be required. May supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Coordinates with the Communications Director to develop, manage, and organize communications activities for the Governor, including but not limited to writing press releases, talking points, organizing press events, managing requests for interviews, writing opinion-editorials, letters to the editor, etc.
Briefs the Governor daily on media issues in preparation for public appearances.
Coordinates with various divisions to advise the Governor on, or prepare responses to, issues for press releases.
Assists with developing media strategy for announcing the Governor’s initiatives.
Assists with monitoring media coverage of the Governor’s events, appearances, and messages, and responds as needed.
Acts as formal spokesperson and media liaison.
Oversees staff in preparation of media materials for the Governor and First Lady.
Oversees public information requests.
Accompanies the Governor at public appearances.
May advise the Governor and appropriate staff on media reaction to proposed initiatives and actions.
Maintains regular work schedule.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in journalism, public relations, media relations, political science, or related field; and
Five (5) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible communication or public relations experience.
Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
